Letting the Founding Fathers Rest in Peace
Feb 28, 2020
Last year, the state House of Representative voted 73–17 to put on the ballot an amendment to section 2 in the Declaration of Rights article in the Tennessee Constitution. It would have added the words stating that our “liberties do not come from government, but from Almighty God.” This language, of course, is consistent with the work of our Founding Fathers found in the Declaration of Independence.
This week, Senator Janice Bowling made a motion in the state Senate’s Judiciary Committee to take up and consider the proposed amendment. Without discussion, Sen. Bowling’s motion failed for lack of a second.
We don’t know why, because there was no discussion, but perhaps the other members of the committee wanted to let our Founding Fathers rest in peace.
