Alabama Lawmaker Wants Mandatory Vasectomies for Men Over 50
Feb 21, 2020
In response to a pro-life bill, Alabama state Rep. Rolanda Hollis (D-Birmingham) filed House Bill 238 that would require all men to get a vasectomy within one month of turning 50 or after the birth of his third child, whichever comes first.
This extreme bill was a direct response to the Human Life Protection Act, which became law last year making it a felony for a physician to perform an abortion unless the woman’s life is at risk and subjecting the physician to up to 99 years in prison. The pro-life bill was temporarily blocked, however, by a federal judge in October pending legal challenges being addressed by the courts.
The reasoning for the vasectomy bill? Rep. Hollis, who ironically refers to herself as both pro-life and pro-choice, explained, “It always takes two to tango. We can’t put all the responsibility on women. Men need to be responsible also.”
In response to this radical proposed legislation, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas tweeted, "Yikes. A government big enough to give you everything is big enough to take everything . . . literally!"
