The Race to Protect Women's Sports From 'Transgender' Males
Feb 21, 2020
Three female high school track and field athletes from Connecticut filed a federal lawsuit to combat the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference’s (CIAC) unfair policy of allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports.
Selina Soule, Alanna Smith, and Chelsea Mitchell, all represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, have felt the pain of lost opportunities, titles, medals, recruitment, and scholarships because males who self-identify as females (“transgender” males) have taken their places on the track. These biological males tend to outperform females due to basic differences in physiology.
The complaint argues that CIAC’s policy jeopardizes Title IX protections, which were originally instituted to protect biological females.
ADF Legal Counsel Christiana Holcomb said in a news release, “Forcing girls to be spectators in their own sports is completely at odds with Title IX, a federal law designed to create equal opportunities for women in education and athletics.”
But Connecticut isn’t the only state where this unfair practice is being resisted. Two bills have been filed in the Tennessee General Assembly that will, in essence, ensure that students participating in a single-sex sport will compete only against students of the same biological sex based on the student’s original birth certificate. Specifically, these bills are Senate Bill 1736 by Sen. Joey Hensley and the companion House Bill 1689 by Rep. Scott Cepicky and Senate Bill 2077 by Sen. Mark Pody and companion bill House Bill 1572 by Rep. Bruce Griffey.
It is anticipated that this legislation will be met with both state and national backlash from organizations and businesses that support the LGBT community. Earlier this month, 35 corporations and 107 small businesses released an open letter against what they consider “harmful bills.” The letter was organized by Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce with support from Freedom For All Americans, GLAAD, and HRC.
