U.S. Senate Denies Protections for Babies
Feb 28, 2020
On Tuesday, despite the efforts of pro-life senators in Washington, the U.S. Senate failed to reach the 60 votes necessary to invoke cloture, which would have allowed a vote on both the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act (56–41) and the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (53–44).
Only three Democrats in the Senate voted to protect babies who survive an abortion. “Democrats had an opportunity to stand on the side of science, to stand on the side of reason, and to stand on the side of precious life,” said Sen. Ted Cruz. “Instead, Democrats stood on the side of barbarity and cruelty.”
The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act gives babies born after botched abortions legal protections under the law to have the same kind of life-saving medical and hospital care as any other baby in need of health care. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act prohibits the abortion of babies at 20 weeks or more gestation, when research shows that babies feel pain in the womb.
The CDC reports that there were 143 born-alive abortion survivors between 2003 and 2014. But Family Research Council has identified at least 170 additional born-alive abortion survivors from the data available in the seven states with laws requiring this information to be reported. That’s 313 babies who were refused life-saving care. How many more babies will face this cruel fate because the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act didn’t pass?
“Refusing to support a measure that would provide life-saving care to an infant who survives an abortion and is born-alive is condoning infanticide,” said FRC’s Tony Perkins.
Penny Nance, president and CEO of Concerned Women for America, added, “It is a very sad day for the unborn, and I pray God’s forgiveness over our country.”
