AG Letter to HHS Calls for Unrestricted Access to Chemical Abortions

In contrast to the news coming out of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, on March 30, attorneys general from 20 states currently under shelter-in-place orders and the District of Columbia signed a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn requesting that they “increase access to reproductive healthcare, including safe and legal abortion, during this pandemic.” They want the removal of “unnecessary, undue burdens in accessing safe and time-sensitive, essential medical care.”

Translated that means this group of pro-abortion lawyers wants the FDA’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy waived to allow for telehealth so that women can induce a chemical abortion at home by pills that come through the mail.

But, says the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the supposed safety and privacy of an at-home abortion is an illusion that presents an undue burden on medical professionals: “Approximately five percent of women who undergo medication abortions will require evaluation in an emergency room, most commonly for hemorrhage . . . Emergency room personnel—who are already struggling to meet the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic—will be further strained to provide care to these women.”

By tweeting, “I won’t stand for assaults on women’s choices, freedoms, and bodies,” and by saying, “the coronavirus is not an excuse for federal, state, or local governments to curtail women’s reproductive freedoms or limit their choices,” New York Attorney General Letitia James, who instigated the letter, seems to be making it clear that the lives and desires of abortion seeking women should trump not only the lives of unborn babies, but also the lives of those struggling with the virus who require health care services.
