Trump Signing ‘Born Alive’ Executive Order To Protect Babies Who Survive Abortion
Sep 25, 2020
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that he would sign an executive order to ensure all babies born alive, including those born prematurely or that survive “botched” abortions, receive medical care.
In recorded remarks for the livestreamed National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, Trump called it the “Born Alive Executive Order,” which pro-life leaders said would provide legal protections for all babies born alive, much like the Senate’s proposed Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would do if passed. Trump stated, “I will be signing the born alive executive order to assure that all precious babies born alive, no matter their circumstances, receive the medical care that they deserve. This is our sacrosanct moral duty.”
Critics argue that such cases are rare and that the law already provides protections to newborns, whether born during a failed abortion or under other circumstances. Vice president of government relations and public policy at Planned Parenthood Jacqueline Ayers stated, “It seems this administration will once again seek a solution to a nonexistent problem. An executive order like Donald Trump described would only spread misinformation, shame people who get abortions, and try to score low-hanging political points.”
In a statement, March for Life President Jeanne Mancini stated that President Trump’s actions, “provide necessary legal protections for some of the most vulnerable in society: survivors of failed abortions.”
