Trump Blocks COVID-19 Funds to Planned Parenthood

No Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds, which are slated to help struggling small businesses negatively affected by the coronavirus, will be going to Planned Parenthood.

The PPP allows businesses with fewer than 500 employees to be forgiven for the principal of a government loan if they don’t lay off their employees. Employers still have to pay the interest on the loan.

But since many of the Planned Parenthood affiliate networks employ fewer than 500 people, why wouldn’t they qualify for funding? The reasoning, according to a senior official from the Trump administration, is that “while each Planned Parenthood affiliate has fewer than 500 employees, nationwide it has over 16,000 employees. So when applying PPP’s affiliation rules neutrally, it’s clear that Planned Parenthood is one large employer and not eligible for PPP money. The interim final rule made crystal clear that an organization with Planned Parenthood’s corporate structure doesn’t qualify.”

The official concluded, “President Trump is committed to ensuring Paycheck Protection Program money is used for saving jobs at small businesses, not getting the government into the business of funding abortion.”

And that is good news for conservatives wanting to spare the lives of the unborn.

So far, the Trump administration has distributed $349 billion in PPP funding to small businesses in its first allotment and an additional $310 billion to small businesses in the second distribution of funding.
