Late Monday night and into early Tuesday morning, areas in and surrounding Nashville experienced a wrenching EF-3 tornado that took the lives of at least  25 people and damaged more than 40 buildings. Areas most affected were Davidson County, Putnam County, Benton County, and Wilson County.

Non-essential state employees were ordered by Governor Lee to stay home, while courts, transit lines, and schools in affected areas were shut down. In addition, some state polling locations ready to take those Super Tuesday votes in the Presidential Preference Primary were closed due to storm damage, which required election officials to direct voters to alternate polling locations that, in turn, resulted in longer lines at those locations.

While the state Capitol was officially closed early on Tuesday and legislators canceled morning meetings, by the afternoon, legislators were able to hold committee meetings to further the work of legislative session.

President Trump is expected to visit Tennessee today. Responding to the disaster Trump said, “We send our love and our prayers of the nation to every family that was affected," he said. “We will get there, and we will recover, and we will rebuild, and we will help them.”

Our hearts go out to all those impacted by the tornado, whether here in our backyard or in surrounding areas.
