Planned Parenthood Pulls Out of Title X Funding Program
Aug 23, 2019
Rather than comply with specific Trump administration stipulations that require abortion facilities to be physically and financially separate from non-abortive family planning facilities in order to receive Title X family planning funds, Planned Parenthood has opted to pull out of the program.
The abortion giant had hoped that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit would step in to block this new Trump regulation, but it has not. Planned Parenthood will lose out on $60 million in annual Title X funds.
Planned Parenthood likes to refer to the regulation as a “gag rule” because it eliminates referrals for abortion, but the new regulation still allows discussion of abortion and allows “nondirective counseling on abortion,” counseling that does not push a woman toward abortion.
While Planned Parenthood hopes the public will see them as a victim “forced out” of the program by the Trump administration, in reality, it was a calculated move to continue performing abortions the way they always have.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) explains, “Every grantee had the choice to accept the grant and comply with the program’s regulations or not accept the grant if they did not want to comply. Some grantees are now blaming the government for their own actions . . . and they are abandoning their obligations to serve their patients under the program.”
