Pelosi Tries to Slip Abortion into Emergency Coronavirus Stimulus Package
Mar 20, 2020
The emergency stimulus bill Speaker Nancy Pelosi filed in the U.S. House last Thursday was supposed to provide coronavirus-related assistance such as paid sick leave and free testing for the coronavirus. However, multiple White House officials found that Pelosi, who was cutting this deal with U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, was trying to use a loophole to include taxpayer funding for abortion contrary to the intention of the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal funding to be used for abortions.
Washington insiders did not fall for Pelosi’s attempt to show a compassionate side when she said, “Families have needs. We don’t need 48 hours. We need to just make a decision to help families right now.”
Human Events Managing Editor Ian Miles Cheong said, “Pelosi wanted to sneak in a billion dollars in funding for abortion programs through the coronavirus stimulus package. Don’t ever tell me the Democrats aren’t politicizing this situation.”
Fortunately, the Trump administration did not sign Pelosi’s first proposal. Said President Trump, “[T]here are things that are in there [Pelosi’s bill] that have nothing to do with what we are talking about.” He added, “It’s not a way for them to get some of the goodies that they haven’t been able to get for the past 25 years.”
The new bill without the abortion language passed the U.S. House last Friday night and passed the U.S. Senate on Wednesday.
