How Governor Lee Is Fighting the Coronavirus in Tennessee
Mar 27, 2020
The Lee administration has called for new measures this week to attempt to flatten the curve of the coronavirus in Tennessee.
Governor Lee has recommended that all public schools in Tennessee remain closed until April 24. Educational content for students will be produced in a joint partnership between PBS and the state Department of Education and should be rolled out on April 6.
He has also recommended that state employees who are currently working from home continue to do so until April 24.
The Department of Human Services is stepping in to help those who have been financially impacted by the coronavirus. Beginning this week, families can apply online for up to two months of emergency cash assistance if their job was cut out or reduced by 50 percent or more because of the virus.
Gov. Lee is expanding testing for the COVID-19 virus in Tennessee by mobilizing the National Guard to assist with testing at 35 remote assessment facilities in rural areas. In fact, Gov. Lee mentioned we are a leader in testing as compared to neighboring states in terms of tests per capita. “We are testing more than states around us that have higher populations,” he said in a news update on Wednesday.
Many mayors in cities across Tennessee have been implementing stay-at-home policies to fight the virus, but so far no statewide lockdown directive has been made.
As of Thursday at 2 p.m., there were 957 positive cases of COVID-19 in Tennessee.
