Franklin’s First Pride Parade Gets Rescheduled
Apr 24, 2020
Franklin was to have its first pride parade at the Franklin Theatre in June, but thankfully it got rescheduled due to concerns about the coronavirus. The parade, organized by the Franklin chapter of Parents, Friends, and Allies United with LGBT+ People (PFLAG), has been rescheduled to June 2021 and will also include a “Children’s Story Hour” and live musical performances.
For those who might not know, the “Children’s Story Hour” is commonly called the Drag Queen Story Hour and features drag queens reading LGBT-positive books to children as young as 3 or 5. Some of the drag queens have even been on the list of sexual offenders, which should be particularly concerning to parents.
The story hour isn’t new to Tennessee. The event was first introduced in the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library a couple of years ago. And then in January 2019, it was to come to the Putnam County Library in Cookeville, but the Tennessee Pastors Network fought back.
In response to the Drag Queen Story Hour, Sen. Paul Bailey and Rep. Andy Holt introduced The Parental Oversight of Public Libraries Act, SB 2896/HB 2721, in the Tennessee General Assembly earlier this year. This bill would require each public library to establish a parental library review board consisting of five adult residents of the public library’s geographic area. The various boards would be required to determine whether any sexual material provided to the minors through the public library is age inappropriate. After passing out of a Senate committee, the legislation stalled in a House subcommittee as the heightened threat of the coronavirus emerged.
