AmazonSmile Called Out for SPLC ‘Hate Group’ Partnership
May 29, 2020
The National Center for Public Policy Research is taking Amazon to task for relying on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) “hate group” list to decide which charities get donations through its AmazonSmile program.
The left-leaning SPLC has discriminated against both our friends at Alliance Defending Freedom and the Family Research Council while allowing donations to liberal organizations like Planned Parenthood and Freedom From Religion Foundation. The National Center for Public Policy Research says that is viewpoint discrimination and it needs to stop.
The National Center for Public Policy Research accumulated signatures on a petition it sent to Amazon’s board of directors opposing reliance on SPLC and also led a shareholder resolution on viewpoint discrimination during Amazon’s shareholder meeting on Wednesday.
Unfortunately, the resolution got voted down.
After Wednesday’s shareholder meeting, Justin Danhof, director of the Free Enterprise Project at the National Center for Public Policy Research, said, “Today, Amazon’s board of directors publicly and unequivocally endorsed viewpoint discrimination against Christian and conservative organizations. The board rejected our request that it reevaluate its reliance on the discredited Southern Poverty Law Center as the de facto gatekeeper of the AmazonSmile charitable program.”
Before Wednesday’s meeting, Amazon had recommended that shareholders reject the resolution. The company said, “The policies and procedures we have in place for our employees, sellers, and customers are intended to foster diversity and inclusion and promote respect for all people. We maintain these policies to facilitate a welcoming environment for our global customers and selling partners while offering the widest selection of items on earth.”
