Abortion Drug Controversy – Part I: FDA Quietly Approves Generic Abortion Drug
Oct 30, 2025 by FACT
Earlier this month, we shared the positive news that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), was initiating a review of the abortion drug mifepristone, the first pill in a two-drug regimen used to terminate first-trimester pregnancies. The investigation was launched in response to dozens of public officials drawing attention to a recent study that the drug is 22x more dangerous than the FDA currently claims. Conservatives viewed the investigation as heralding the onset of pro-life policies from HHS and FDA – but unfortunately, recent actions have proved that to be a false hope.

Just two weeks after RFK Jr. announced the review of mifepristone, the FDA quietly approved a generic version of the abortion drug to the shock and dismay of pro-life advocates.

“This is shocking. FDA has just approved ANOTHER chemical abortion drug, when the evidence shows chemical abortion drugs are dangerous and even deadly for the mother. And of course 100% lethal to the child,” Senator Josh Hawley wrote on X following the announcement.

“This decision by the FDA to quietly approve a new generic abortion drug just as the government was shutting down is really reckless and disappointing,” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America’s director of state public affairs, Kelsey Pritchard, shared. “This is not MAGA. This is not MAHA.”

Senator Josh Hawley and Congressman Mark Harris are leading a coalition of over a dozen GOP congressmen who are calling for an investigation into the “rogue actors” inside the FDA who were responsible for the drug's approval.

“It is clear that rogue actors within the FDA are working to undermine both the sanctity of life and the Administration’s commitment to protecting it,” Harris wrote.“For this reason, we respectfully urge that you consider the director of the Office of Generic Drugs, the director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, and other bureaucrats responsible for this reckless decision as part of your reduction-in-force evaluations.”

“FDA is supposed to be conducting a review of the safety regulations around mifepristone. But because this new generic has been approved before any changes to those safety protocols, this drug may be exempted from any new safety standards imposed on mifepristone in the future. That would render your safety review toothless and irrelevant,” Hawley explained in a separate letter.

We pray the FDA quickly reverses course before countless women and unborn babies are impacted by this reckless decision.
